Ode to the Land

For those of us who live and vacation along the Maine coast it’s easy to forget that much of our State is farmland, forest and countryside. A Sunday drive through winding country lanes hunting for antiques or coming across a charming out-of-the-way farm stand is just as pleasurable as a day on the water.

Significant artists, from Alvan Fisher, Frederic Church and Eastman Johnson to Marsden Hartley and Neil Welliver crafted their timeless imagery based on the verdant forests, hard working logging camps and majestic mountain vistas of the state’s interior.

Many of our artists follow in this tradition, painting en plein air as they wander from town to town capturing the magnificence of the Land on their panels and canvases. Our latest themed exhibit features a selection of paintings made during their travels.
